There are concerns about who was actually making important choices during former President Joe Biden’s administration after a government watchdog accused the Biden administration of using an autopen to sign almost all of his executive orders.
An electromechanical tool that accurately mimics a person’s signature is called an autopen. Presidents of the United States and other high-ranking authorities occasionally use it to sign a lot of documents without consulting them directly.
While it may be lawful in certain situations, its use to sign important legal documents has sparked questions about accountability and authenticity, particularly in the absence of clear oversight.
Every document bearing Biden’s signature, save for the letter declaring his withdrawal from the 2024 race, appears to have been created with an autopen, according to an analysis by the Oversight Project, a branch of the right-leaning Heritage Foundation.
Concerns over Biden’s mental health and the effectiveness of unelected officials making decisions on his behalf have been raised by these findings.
The Oversight Project posted pictures of Biden’s signatures on X along with the statement, “WHOEVER CONTROLLED THE AUTOPEN CONTROLLED THE PRESIDENCY.” The watchdog claimed that significant executive acts, including directions, decrees, and pardons, were probably signed during Biden’s presidency without his direct participation.
