Officially, Texas lawmaker Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who yelled and shook his cane at President Donald Trump during his congressional speech, has been censured for his behavior. Less than two days after Green was removed out of the U.S. House chamber for his outburst during Trump’s remarks, the censure vote was held. A number of Democrats gathered on the House floor and started singing in protest as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) started reading the resolution, which was approved by a vote of 224-198 on Thursday morning.
Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News was the first to report on the strange scenario. After the Green censure, Democrats and Republicans are now yelling at each other in the house. C-SPAN footage shows the tumultuous moment as several dozen Democrats swarm in front of Speaker Mike Johnson, who is using gavels and attempting to calm the mob in a bid to restore order. “Things going really well here,” he wrote on X.

In an attempt to calm the unrest, Johnson briefly suspends the day’s activities by calling a recess when Democrats refuse to leave. “Last night I stood up for those who need Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security,” Green wrote on social media Wednesday, sharing a snapshot of his demonstration. #ISaidWhatISaid Democrats will never give up on ensuring that every American lives in safety, health, and financial security.

His remarks follow four years of higher-than-normal inflation and significant spending legislation signed by then-President Joe Biden after it was passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress. Republican claims that Trump and the GOP were better equipped to boost the economy and lower costs helped the Democratic Party lose the November elections. In many regions of the nation, gas prices have stabilized or decreased in the weeks since Trump took office, and the pace of inflation has not increased. In the past, when energy prices have decreased, so has the cost of shipping commodities to the market, and consumer prices have generally decreased as well.
Since Speaker Mike Johnson acquired the gavel in October 2023, Green’s censure is the third time a Democratic member of Congress has been subjected to such a punishment. Former Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was censured in December 2023 for setting up a fire alarm in an effort to interfere with House Republicans’ legislative business. Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MN) was censured by House Republicans a month prior for yelling antisemitic epithets at an anti-Israel demonstration.
Members of the Democratic Party seem to be suffering psychologically as a result of their inability to successfully challenge Republican dominance in Washington, D.C. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) cautioned Democrats against having outbursts or bringing props prior to Trump’s speech, but several Democratic members showed up with placards and shirts criticizing Trump’s policies, generally disregarding the warning.
