The well-known actor Richard Gere, who starred in movies like Pretty Woman and An Officer and a Gentleman, has declared his intention to relocate to Spain with his family, expressing discontent with the political and social situation in the US at the moment. The 74-year-old Gere bemoaned the growing divisiveness in America and the power of tech millionaires like Elon Musk. He claimed that he believed America was becoming “unrecognizable” in part because of the power of people like Musk, who can sway public opinion with a tweet.

In order to provide their family with a more straightforward, natural lifestyle, Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, intend to move to a quiet town in Galicia, Spain. Some chastised him for “giving up,” while others applauded his choice, seeing it as a protest. Gere is still open to overseas projects that fit with his principles, but his move may represent a step back from Hollywood even though he hasn’t officially resigned. His departure brings up more general issues regarding the future of America and the role of influential people in society.
