I witnessed Anna, a struggling mother, and her daughter Ella sharing a single cheeseburger one evening at McDonald’s. Their predicament moved me, so I got Ella a Happy Meal. After learning that Anna was a former teacher taking care of Ella, who had leukemia, I made the decision to assist even more, paying certain expenses, getting medication with a nurse friend’s assistance,
and putting them in touch with local resources. As time went on, Ella pursued art while Anna went back to school for social work, both of them succeeding in spite of obstacles. I learned from their narrative the transformative power of kindness and how one tiny deed may change lives.
