A prominent member of the left-leaning Episcopalian community, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, has come under fire lately for using her position at the Washington National Cathedral to speak to President Trump and Vice President JD Vance about immigration and LGBTQ issues. Budde urged Trump to have empathy for immigrants and underrepresented groups in her speech, which focused on subjects like illegal immigration and the participation of biological males in women’s sports. In a later interview, Budde defended her remarks in the face of criticism, highlighting her desire to highlight the humanity of these groups. Trump responded by denouncing her speech, calling her a member of the “Radical Left,” and accused her of politicizing religious issues. Budde, who is well-known for her political activism, has backed Obama’s campaign in the past and has been connected to a number of liberal causes.
