As the appointment decision draws near, a leading candidate to succeed Vice President-elect J.D. Vance in the U.S. Senate recently paid a visit to President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
Republican Governor Mike DeWine will select Vance’s successor in accordance with Ohio law, and he will hold office until a special election in 2026. The outcome of that election will decide who serves out the rest of Vance’s term, which ends in 2028. To be eligible for a full six-year term, the victor of the special election would then have to run again in 2028.
Given that the new Congress is set to meet on January 3, DeWine is anticipated to make his announcement in the upcoming weeks.
According to a News 5 Cleveland source, DeWine visited Trump’s Palm Beach home earlier this week with Republican Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, who is reportedly a leading contender to succeed Vance.
DeWine is looking for a “workhorse” who is “qualified and ready to earn the trust of Ohio voters for another term,” according to Dan Tierney, a spokesperson for the governor’s office, who talked to Fox News.
