Young couples typically believe they have decades to construct their lives and mature together after being married. However, as we all know, life can be wildly unpredictable and can take you in unexpected directions!
When Ryan Finley got up on a Saturday in May 2007, everything appeared to be as usual. He noticed that he should also wake his wife, Jill Finley, after checking the time.
He subsequently recollected, “I went to wake Jill up, which is a miracle in itself as I never, ever do that on Saturday mornings.”
She didn’t answer when he called her name. He started shaking her in surprise, but she didn’t respond. Then he began to feel anxious and afraid. Ryan summoned emergency personnel right away and gave his wife cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
As soon as paramedics came, they swiftly got her into an ambulance and drove her to the hospital. He drove his pickup closely behind the ambulance.
Upon arriving at the hospital, medical personnel evaluated Jill’s health and determined that she had experienced a cardiac arrest.
While Ryan waited outside the ER, periodically receiving updates on his wife’s condition, Jill underwent necessary medical operations to help stabilize her.
Finally coming out to brief Ryan on his wife’s condition, the doctor concluded by urging Ryan to pray. “When a doctor tells you, you need to start praying, I feel it’s about as serious as it’s going to get,” Ryan remarked, expressing his realization of how severe the situation was.
Ryan soon learned that his wife was in a coma from the physicians. It was unbelievable to him that his lovely and vibrant 31-year-old wife was engaged in a life-or-death struggle.
A constant flow of people came to see Jill and Ryan and offer support throughout the two weeks while she was in a coma. Additionally, one of Jill’s relatives arrived holding a Bible. For at least an hour, he stood and read Jill passages from the Bible.
Ryan was instructed to read any passages from the Bible if he felt like it. Following that day, Ryan would read aloud from the Bible to his wife in the hopes that she would awaken.
Ryan returned home to spend some time alone after Jill was in a coma for 11 days. He contemplated whether to remove Jill from life support as the physicians recommended. Physicians recommended removing her from life support because they thought her condition would not improve.
Even though he was aware that Jill might die shortly after, he instructed doctors to end his wife’s life the next day. She was taken off life support on the fourteenth day of her coma.
Five hours or so after being taken off life support, Jill began to stir and murmur. Ryan stepped out into the waiting room till his wife died away because he couldn’t bear to watch what he believed to be her final moments.
“The nurse came out and said, ‘I think you need to come in, she’s talking,'” he recalls vividly from the following moments.
He entered with the intention of speaking with his wife one more time. He remembers, “Jill was talking when I walked in.” “Get me out of here,” was the first thing she said. I’d like to return home.
Ryan peppered her with questions that she could only respond to if she was really present since he was astonished but unsure if it was simply lucid muttering. She gave accurate answers to the names of their pets and a few mental math questions he asked her. She even requested to have dinner at her favorite Mexican restaurant.
Later, Jill claimed she had no memory of the coma and only felt as though she had been gone for a while before returning. When asked in an interview what he believed brought his wife back, Ryan said, “God,” right away. divine help. That’s how I truly feel.
After Jill woke up, things did not return to normal. Some of her motor abilities, such as tying her shoe laces or brushing her teeth, had to be relearned from start.
The couple makes sure they are by each other’s sides at all times and views this as a second shot at life and their relationship. Jill claims that Ryan was correct to take her off life support since she would not want to live her entire life as a “vegetable.”
Ryan said that he regularly checks to make sure she is still there because the entire experience still causes him worry and fear. He claims that not a night passes that he doesn’t wake up. I normally kick her, and I know we’re good if she kicks me back.
You would never believe how often life gives you another opportunity! The fact that Ryan and Jill Finley are doing well makes us very happy.
