Seventy years later, the granddaughter donned the grandmother’s immaculately preserved wedding gown with equal style!
Maddy Bill is 27 years old and lives in Ambler, Pennsylvania. She made a video for her TikTok account to showcase the bag that she received from her 91-year-old maternal grandma, Marie D’Alessandro Donato.
The suitcase’s contents are rather interesting. It contains every dress her grandmother wore during her 1952 honeymoon trip to New York. The video claims that this is the first time in seventy years that someone else has opened the suitcase!
Her grandmother, who had gone on her honeymoon with her late husband Anthony James Donato, washed everything she wore to preserve it for her children and grandchildren. Well, it worked! Seventy years later, her efforts are still valued by thousands of individuals online.
Since I was a young child, I have always been aware of this suitcase. In an interview, the speaker stated, “My mom found it when she was a little older and told me about it. She kindly saved it for me and my sister for when we were of age.”
She continued, “I opened it up and I was just like, ‘This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,’ because it really just brought everything back to me, especially memories — my grandfather passed away about 21 years ago — so just those memories of my grandparents in that time in their lives, it’s just really cool.”
Her grandparents, the Donatos, were married in 1952 and traveled to Manhattan, including The New Yorker Hotel, for their honeymoon in May of that year.
“She was like, ‘I did not care because I was with my honey’ — that’s what she called my pop pop,” Bill said. “And she had just a wonderful time just being with him and really just taking it all in — that there was this time in their life where they could start a family and all these things she’d always dreamed of,” she ended. Her grandparents, the Donatos, were married in 1952 and spent their honeymoon in New York City that May, visiting places in Manhattan like The New Yorker Hotel. She received hundreds of responses after posting a video with just the luggage, encouraging her to try on the gowns, so she did. She tried on her grandmother’s gowns and her jewelry. She fit everything well. She also remarked on how well-preserved the clothing was. “It’s pretty cool how they’ve been so intact to this day, like it was 70 years ago [and] there’s elastic on some of the pieces and [they’re] still springy,” Madeline said.
Since she was a small child, she has been fascinated by the piece that she modeled for her fans. A black dress that tightens the waist and has short sleeves. She reveals that she had always been enthralled with a photograph of her grandmother wearing the dress while she was staying at the New Yorker hotel.
On the train to the big city, she also tried on a sophisticated gray jacket, skirt, and sleeveless top that she said her grandmother had worn. Without a sure, she has great fashion sense!
She can’t wait to show the world a side of her grandmother and show what a wonderful woman she is.
According to Madeline Bill, she told her grandmother how famous she is and how everyone in the world appreciates her sense of style.
“I’d really like to keep it for someone.” I don’t want it to just be a piece that is worn now; I want someone in my future to enjoy it as much as my grandma did for me,” she added, adding that it might be my future child or someone wonderful in my life who is younger than me.
