Because of the uproar surrounding singer Miranda Lambert’s decision to halt one of her recent performances in order to reprimand fans for taking photographs during the performance, Whoopi Goldberg shocked viewers of “The View” this week when the co-host left the stage during a live event. Naturally, despite the wishes of many critics, Whoopi Goldberg was merely quitting the show as a joke. As the co-hosts discussed the matter with Miranda Lambert, videos of Whoopi Goldberg leaving “The View” went viral online, leaving many critics hoping for a fleeting second or two.
For context, Miranda Lambert was the subject of a discussion after she abruptly ended her performance to shout at several concertgoers who tried to take photographs during the performance. Miranda Lambert tickets likely cost more than a few dollars, and it’s normal for concertgoers to capture pictures to post on social media or preserve for future reference. The co-hosts of “The View” were discussing the incident with Miranda Lambert, including whether or not she should have interrupted the show to yell at viewers, whether or not selfies should be allowed at performances, etc. The hazy jumble of viewpoints led Whoopi to get up, approach the crowd, and declare, “I’m leaving y’all.”
When discussing Miranda Lambert’s contentious issue, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin made an effort to consider both sides of the debate. Griffin said Lambert shouldn’t be criticizing people who have spent a lot of money to watch her perform because it makes them feel embarrassed, especially if they are only snapping photos and aren’t bothering other fans. Whoopi Goldberg enters the fray at this point and implies that the fans are impolite for taking selfies. “They bought tickets and came to see her, so she’s singing,” Whoopi remarked. [Show] a modicum of deference … Recognize that both you and she can see each other.
Although Sara Haines, another host, noted that the fans Miranda Lambert reprimanded were seated rather close to the stage at the time of the selfie incident, does that imply the well-known singer should be shouting at them, interrupting the performance, and creating a commotion? According to an article on Page Six that discussed the Whoopi Goldberg walk-off, Sunny Hostin claimed that Miranda Lambert is at fault.
Sunny Hostin, who was mentioned by Page Six, brought up the cost of the VIP tickets at the location where Miranda Lambert’s selfie reprimand occurred. They were in the VIP area, and the pricey tickets cost $757. I apologize, just me, but if I paid $757, I would take as many selfies as I wanted. That seems excessive, and to defend the selfie-takers, you can guarantee your bottom dollar that I would have a few pictures of the event if I had paid that much for any show. I would take as many pictures as I wanted for that money, and I’m sure Miranda Lambert wouldn’t be berating me for it. There is a limit and a difference, so even while I’m on the “I paid for this and I want a photo or two of it” bandwagon, I wouldn’t spend my entire night taking selfies. Enjoy the show, take pictures when it’s appropriate, and be present. Fans can enjoy the greatest experience without being publically embarrassed by a stiff vocalist by striking a balance.
The good part comes here. When Sunny Hostin does this, Whoopi Goldberg says that if individuals can’t stop taking pictures of themselves, they should “stay home.” Sunny Hostin began to defend her stance in the Miranda Lambert argument after Goldberg suggested that fans should concentrate on the singer. However, Goldberg eventually got up, walked over to the live audience, and took a photo with a member of the audience to support her claims. But was it successful? You have to make that decision.
