The lovely tabby cat, Petunia, had a difficult beginning in life. She had obvious face injuries when Emily Blythe first saw her at the Lake County Animal Shelter in Florida. The truth was even more tragic than the shelter staff’s first belief that they were the result of a birth condition. Petunia’s owners had shot her when she was a kitten because they thought she was a rat. She lived, but she had long-term health problems because she lost a portion of her left lip and nostril.
A Dedicated Foster Home
Petunia was a strong cat, even in spite of her past. She immediately won the heart of Emily, a seasoned shelter volunteer, who made the decision to foster her. As their relationship deepened over time, Emily found it impossible to picture living without Petunia. Petunia finally found the loving permanent home she deserved when Emily adopted her. Despite having respiratory problems and being sensitive on her face, Petunia flourished in her new loving home.
A Loving Cat
Despite her special needs, Petunia shared many characteristics with normal cats. She enjoyed cuddling and lovingly pressing her forehead against her loved ones. In spite of her appearance, she exuded warmth and love. She would frequently be seen dozing off in her son’s bean bag chair, which was her favorite spot to unwind. Young foster kittens and Petunia shared a special affinity, as if she recognized their need for care, having been one herself.
A Happy Life
After her traumatic past, Petunia was able to find solace and happiness because of Emily. She could only eat with one side of her mouth and needed to have her respiratory infections closely watched, but she had a happy life despite these challenges. Sadly, Petunia died of an ailment she was unable to fend off despite spending years in a loving home. Emily will always remember Petunia as a cat who filled her life with love and joy, even if her departure was devastating.
The tale of Petunia serves as a reminder that all animals, regardless of their past, are deserving of a chance at happiness and love.
