Alan, a six-year-old orphan, had experienced abandonment before. He had clung to a desire for his mother ever since he was abandoned on a shelter’s steps as a newborn. He frequently wondered what it would be like to be held and loved by a mother as he looked at other kids with their parents by their sides. One Sunday in particular, he and Nancy, his guardian, attended church. Alan experienced a wave of desire that day that he was unable to control. With his hands clutched tightly together, he walked to the front of the church and knelt down, his tiny body trembling as he muttered his requests.
