Harrison Butker, a kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, has drawn a lot of criticism for his recent commencement speech, which disparaged everything from abortion to women who work outside the home.
However, he has an odd ally in Whoopi Goldberg, who spoke up for Butker during Thursday’s “The View” episode.
Butker criticized Joe Biden’s support for abortion rights during Saturday’s commencement at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, and asserted that a woman’s life doesn’t truly begin until she marries and has children.
Although Butker’s remarks sparked social media backlash and an NFL reprimand, Goldberg defended his freedom to say those things to her fellow “View” co-hosts on Thursday.
Goldberg remarked, “Listen, I appreciate it when people express what they need to express.” He attends a Catholic university and is a devout Catholic. He is free to hold these views; they are his convictions. I’m under no obligation to believe them. I am under no obligation to accept them. They are not need to be accepted by the women in that audience.
Butker reminded Goldberg of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was shunned by the League for kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem.
Goldberg stated, “We want to respect people whose ideas are different from ours, just as we want to represent when Colin Kaepernick takes a knee.”
Butker had the right to his opinions, according to Goldberg, but it didn’t imply that other people had to share them.
Additionally, the women seated there will be content if they follow his advise. “Good for them, they’ll be happy in a different way if they don’t,” Goldberg remarked.
