According to her spokesperson Ian Krager, Rep. Nancy Pelosi is recuperating from “successful” hip replacement surgery she had on Saturday morning in a U.S. military hospital in Germany.
According to media sources, Pelosi, the former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, tumbled down a set of steps while in Luxembourg.
Other than reporting that she “sustained an injury during an official engagement,” her office has not offered any other information regarding the incident.
As part of a legislative delegation from the United States, she had visited the small European country to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
According to media reports, Pelosi was supposed to attend a gathering on Saturday in the Belgian town of Bastogne, which was a major location of fierce combat during the conflict.
Krager stated in the statement, “Speaker Pelosi is grateful to the medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg and the US military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base for their excellent care and kindness.”
The Landstuhl base is situated around 120 kilometers east of Luxembourg in western Germany.
San Francisco is still represented in Congress by Democrat Pelosi. She is still one of the most powerful people in her party, despite leaving her senior leadership role in 2023. After her surgery, it’s unclear when she will be allowed to return to the United States.
Many people believed she had a significant impact on President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of his reelection campaign earlier this year.
Senior leaders like Pelosi’s influence in Democratic politics is likely to be coming to an end with President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
According to a report published this month by the UK’s DailyMail.com, Pelosi, the woman “who for decades reigned as kingmaker in her party, faces the prospect of having her status as a power player in the party unceremoniously stripped away on the back of” Harris’s passing.
She was instrumental in efforts to disqualify President Joe Biden just months before to the shocking decline.
During Harris’ concession speech at Howard University in November, Pelosi, 84, was observed arguing angrily with fellow Democratic insider and former DNC chief Donna Brazile. According to the outlet, as the blame game intensifies after the vice president’s crushing defeat, the former Speaker is in the forefront of the accusations.
Kevin O’Leary, a Shark Tank star and business investor, stated last week that “the influences of a [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer or a Pelosi or a movie star or an Obama deciding to anoint somebody – those guys are gone.”
In a barely disguised allusion to actor George Clooney, who famously and publicly urged Biden to withdraw from reelection after a catastrophic debate with Trump, he continued, “In four years, they won’t have that kind of influence.”
Pelosi is explicitly being blamed by some Republicans for the massive Democratic losses, which range from the Senate turning red to the House remaining in the race.
