At 9:00 p.m. on January 29, a military helicopter and an American Airlines plane collided in midair close to Washington, DC, causing both to crash into the Potomac River. The helicopter was carrying three people, while the American Airlines jet, jet 5342, was carrying 64 people, including the U.S. Figure Skating team. Sadly, no survivors have been found despite the recovery of 19 bodies. The incident’s cause is yet unknown, but the black boxes should yield important information for the inquiry. While former President Trump has described the incident as preventable, American Airlines’ CEO has responded to the tragedy by pledging to support those affected. Strong gusts and cold waters have complicated search efforts and hampered rescue operations.
