By Memorial Day, House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that he anticipates passing the majority of President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda with a single “big, beautiful bill.”
Johnson stated in a Fox News interview that Republicans would try to cram as many policy issues as they could into a huge reconciliation bill in order to avoid the 60-vote threshold needed to pass most Senate legislation.
For reconciliation legislation to be passed in the upper house, 50 votes, or a simple majority, are required.
“President Donald J. Trump will be sworn in for his second term in 15 days. In order for him to be ready on day one, we also want to make sure that we’re kicking off the agenda now over the following two weeks. You know we have a lot to do. Additionally, we have been assembling all of the plays and determining the order in which we will perform them. And it excites us much,” Johnson stated.
President Trump will ultimately choose, as he likes to say, a single, large, attractive bill. And that has a lot of appeal because we can combine everything into a single, pivotal vote that literally has the power to save the nation because it has so many components. Additionally, it will give us a little more time to work out a solution,” Johnson continued.
Johnson declared that he will promptly forward some “low-hanging fruit” measures, such as those pertaining to the border, for a vote on the floor. But Johnson said the reconciliation package will also include deportation and immigration policies, energy permitting reform, and tax reduction.
