Greetings from the world of unusual kitties!
Imagine a magnificent tiger with the size and disposition of your average house cat, gracefully skulking through the recesses of your living room. The Toyger is a type of domestic cat that combines the lovable, playful personality of a daily feline companion with the captivating beauty of a wild tiger.
The Breed’s History and Origin
In the late 1980s, the Toyger breed first appeared in the United States. Its origins can be found in Judy Sugden’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm. The goal of Judy, a Bengal cat breeder and the daughter of Jean Mill, the man who is credited with creating the Bengal breed, was to produce a beautiful domesticated cat that would emulate the grace and beauty of the magnificent tiger.
Judy became interested in feline hybridization after noticing a fascinating circular pattern in one of her Bengals, Millwood Sharp Shooter,’s hair. This finding sparked Judy’s incredible effort to create a breed that would display the striking, striped appearance of tigers.
She accomplished this by carefully choosing Bengal cats, crossing them with a domestic shorthair cat that has stripes, and then bringing in a foundation cat that she found on the streets of Kashmir, India.
Because the term “Toyger” combines the words “toy” and “tiger,” it jokingly suggests that this breed has the features of a tiger but the size and disposition of a house cat.
Physical Characteristics of a Toyger
The Toyger’s physical characteristics are extremely amazing, combining grace and aggression in a compelling way. With its stunning beauty and painstaking craftsmanship, this designer breed honors its wild cousin, the tiger.
