Former NFL wide receiver and Super Bowl winner Jacoby Jones passed away at his suburban Houston home. He was forty years old.
His death was reported on Sunday, July 14, although no cause of death was given right away.
Drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft, the Pro Bowler displayed his skills while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans. Additionally, he competed in Dancing With the Stars season 16, finishing third.
When Jones was in Baltimore, his career took off. His incredible performance during the 2012 playoffs, which included catching a game-winning 70-yard touchdown pass, earned him praise. In Super Bowl XLVII the following year, he set a new record with a kick return score of 108 yards, the longest in Super Bowl history. He helped the Ravens upset the 49ers 34-31, which was San Francisco’s first-ever Super Bowl loss.
Jones returned to his alma institution, Lane College, after retiring in 2017 to share his coaching expertise as a wide receiver. Prior to being a member of Alabama State’s coaching staff in 2022, he also contributed his knowledge to Morgan State.
Following the devastating news, NFL players and supporters have honored Jones on social media.
On Sunday, July 14, the Baltimore Ravens released a statement expressing their sadness.
We are deeply saddened by the news of Jacoby Jones’s demise. There was something special about Jacoby that made him relate to everyone he met. The statement said, “He had a unique presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day because of his charisma, joy, and love.” In addition to his accomplishments on the football field, Jacoby will be remembered for his enduring relationships with innumerable members of the Baltimore community, the Ravens organization, and every neighborhood he called home. As we all start to cope with this terrible loss, we send Jacoby’s family our sincerest condolences.
John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, also posted a heartfelt message:
Jacoby Jones was adored by me. All of us did. His passion, energy, and affection for others were strong. He was a beacon. He was the beloved son of Ms. Emily, his devoted mother. They were really near. He was a devout man. In a snowy shootout against the Vikings, Jacoby’s conversation with his mother in the end zone right before a late-game kickoff return was my greatest football play. After then, Jacoby sprinted to grab the ball and return it for a score. Every time I saw Jacoby’s joyful, smiling face, it was my favorite personal moment. Jacoby, may you rest in peace in Jesus’ embrace.
Through X, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also expressed his condolences, writing, “I send my deepest sympathies to Jacoby Jones’ family during this trying time. It was a pleasure to coach him while he was with the Steelers.
