When Joy Behar of The View pushed a topic about Texas and anti-gun laws, Matthew McConaughey, a vocal supporter of “responsible gun ownership,” shot her down.
Shortly after rubbing the co-host’s foot, she inquired about the 54-year-old sex symbol’s stance on weapons, which prompted him to make a pointed remark.

The 54-year-old actor Matthew McConaughey, a native of Uvalde, Texas, was very much affected by the May 2022 shooting at an elementary school in the city.
Following the Robb Elementary School massacre, in which an 18-year-old ex-student massacred 19 kids and two teachers, McConaughey attended a White House briefing and urged Americans to “renegotiate our wants from our needs.”
“We require background checks and responsible ownership.” The minimum requirement to buy an AR-15 weapon must be raised to 21. Those firearms require a waiting time. Red flag laws are sensible, useful, and tactical restrictions that we need, along with penalties for violators,” he stated.
“Responsible gun owners are tired of the Second Amendment being misused and hijacked by some deranged individuals,” the Oscar winner continues.
Since then, McConaughey and his spouse, Camila Alves, have started the Greenlights Grant Initiative, which “ensures the well-being of our children and creates safer school environments,” according to the website.
Not “okay, okay, okay.”
McConaughey made an appearance on The View in the fall of 2023 to promote his children’s book “Just Because.”
The Texas native discussed the book and his three children while answering panelists’ questions and massaging co-host Joy Behar’s foot.
Sunny Hostin then reversed the previous statement, praising McConaughey for being “so outspoken against violence, and gun violence in particular.”
You thought about running for governor of Texas in 2021, but you ultimately chose to put your family first. Do you believe you will hold a political position in the future? The individual, who had thought about running for governor of his home state two years prior, was questioned by Hostin.
The Spirits of Friendships “Yes,” the former star said, “if that’s where I would consider myself most helpful. I want to be the best father I can be right now.
Behar then brought up the topic again and appeared to strike a chord with the Dallas Buyers Club star. The discussion turned heated in the now-viral video.
“Do you think you could get elected in Texas being anti-gun?” Behar questioned, further advancing the discussion of politics and firearms.
“One thing about me and politics, to give you a direct statement right there, is me playing a game,” McConaughey stated, repeating her question before he answered. He then waved his finger at her and continued to sound like the epitome of a gentleman by saying, “I’m not interested in playing.”
“All right, don’t do that,” Behar remarked.
“I did want to say that I’ve done a lot of research in terms of your advocacy, and I don’t know that you’re anti-gun, I think you’re pro-gun responsibility and legislation,” Hostin said after the break in an attempt to patch things up.
