I get pretty tired of my job sometimes. The experience of waking up one morning with a headache from the thought of another workday is probably familiar to you.
I never have to worry about my job putting me in danger, even though I may occasionally whine and have days when all I want to do is lie in bed and watch TV.
Even though most of us don’t think about it every day, there is a lot to be said about that. It is easy to forget that there are occupations that are not only cognitively taxing but also actively dangerous for their practitioners.
One is being a firefighter. In my opinion, firefighters don’t receive enough recognition for the courage they display just by showing up for work every day, but there is a picture going viral right now that rightfully raises awareness of the crazy circumstances they are occasionally expected to work in.
If my NBA career didn’t take off, I would have loved to be a firefighter when I was younger, but these days I’m content that others are doing it instead of me.
There aren’t many things I would enjoy less than running straight into a burning building, call me a coward.
Thankfully for society, not everyone shares my perspective. Every time a fire starts or a major disaster happens, there are courageous people who frequently put their lives in danger to save others and reduce the number of casualties.
And we’re not only talking about saving lives from burning cars or rescuing people from burning apartment buildings—both of which are undoubtedly heroic deeds—but also about the times when firefighters are sent to fight wildfires, one of nature’s most dangerous and destructive forces.
You are probably all too aware with the harm that wildfires can inflict if you live in a nation where they happen. Naturally, they don’t just cease burning on their own, and if they are allowed to go amok, they will obliterate almost everything in their path.
Firefighters can help with it. They charge in to try their hardest to stop the fires from spreading, saving many lives in the process, rather than leaving the afflicted areas like everyone else is told to do.
One of these wildfires was burning in Portugal a few years ago, and it took the combined efforts of 1,150 firemen to contain it.
Although the post-apocalyptic image was terrifying to witness, it did result in an amazing photograph that demonstrated the amazing effort firefighters perform to keep people safe.
According to sources, Pedro Brás uploaded the picture with the following caption: “We were entitled to 25 minutes of river beach, although it was covered by smoke, after a night and a day fighting the GĂłis Forest Fire.”
The image in question depicted a bunch of firefighters dozing off on a lawn, so exhausted that they had essentially collapsed where they were standing to rest.
Pedro claims that after fighting the flame for twenty-four hours straight, the firemen took a brief twenty-five-minute respite.
I’m not sure about you, but I believe that firefighters everywhere should be given greater recognition and appreciation for their efforts.
