In a scathing statement on Wednesday, Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s beleaguered choice for defense secretary, reaffirmed his dedication to winning the position. Hegseth promised to “fight like hell” to demonstrate that he is the best person to lead the Department of Defense, despite concerns about his credentials and previous behavior.
But there is no guarantee that he will be confirmed. The claims of wrongdoing from Hegseth’s history, such as his time as a Fox News host and his previous military service, have alarmed Republican senators.
The rest is gone. Anything else that takes attention away from that shouldn’t be taking place. Senators in that advise and consent process are sending me that message. It has been an amazing process.
