Madison, age eight, and Isla, age six, missed their father, Brian.
They hadn’t gone shopping, banded together to pester their mother, or grabbed cookies and ice cream from the kitchen at night after he left for his wonderful abode.
Because those things weren’t enjoyable without Daddy Brian. “Brian, you’re spoiling those girls!” Linda, Brian’s wife, used to chastise him.
“Why are you all banding together against me? I am aware that you steal for your tiny angels from the pantry!
“Well, I’ll spend the rest of my life spoiling them!” Brian would say, grinning broadly.
“As long as I live, they will always come first for me! I apologize, but you now face competition, honey. I hug her and say, “But you know, I adore all my girls—including you.”
Brian was like that. He was always able to bring things into balance. He was the ideal husband and father. However, following his death, a change occurred.
Madison and Isla were silent, and Linda—well, she was also having a hard time accepting his passing.
Ultimately, her final recollections of Brian were nothing but awful. She was powerless to save him, and he passed away right in front of her.
The physicians had informed Linda that it was stage four cancer. They gave it their all and began Brian’s treatment in the proper manner, but the awful illness prevailed and they lost the fight.
Brian’s condition continued to worsen, and one morning he failed to wake up. The previous night, Madison and Isla had slept next to him on the hospital bed.
That evening, he had invited Linda to accompany him in leaving the girls. He most likely felt that was his final evening with his young girls.
The physicians said, “Time of death: 4 a.m. Tuesday,” that morning after Linda called, concerned that Brian was not picking up his cell phone.
The physicians looked at her pityingly, then draped a white hospital sheet over his once-smiling face. Brian had left. Linda was devastated to learn that he would not be returning.
Despite her best efforts, Linda was unable to gather herself after Brian’s passing. She hadn’t been as powerful as her girls. At least they’d been to the funeral. The thought of his being buried beneath the earth was intolerable to Linda.
“I’m interested to see what my small girls will wear on my birthday because I want them to look their best. Girls, do you swear to show me your gorgeous attire when you visit Daddy?
Brian’s final words were, “You see, it’s possible that Daddy won’t be with you that day, but you have to promise me you’ll look your best.” His final wish was to have his girls come see him on his birthday.
Thus, the girls begged Linda to take them shopping the day before.
Little Isla said, “Mommy.” “My red dress was adored by Daddy.” I got one for my birthday from him. I’d want a red gown.
Madison said, “Mom, you can choose for me.” “I want Dad’s favorite color to be this one.”
Linda attempted to sidestep the subject by saying, “I – I don’t think I have the time, girls.” She continued to mourn Brian’s passing. She wasn’t prepared for any kind of resolution.
“But we must go see Daddy!” “Isla said.” He requested that I dress elegantly for his birthday. He also asked Madison.
Linda’s eyes filled with tears. She had forgotten Brian’s birthday because she was so overcome with grief.
What was it he asked you? With tears in her eyes, Linda asked.
“On his birthday, Daddy wanted to see us wearing lovely outfits. “Mommy, we have to go see him,” Isla said. “Be quick! We must go shopping!
Linda inquired, “When did he ask this?” “I—I had no idea.” She was unaware of Brian’s final request.
Madison disclosed, “The night before he died, mom.” He said he wanted to see us dressed nicely for his birthday while holding our hands. I think we ought to do this for him, Mom.
Please, I know you’re upset. She put her hands over Linda’s ears. We must do this for Isla, even though I know you miss your father. She really misses her father. Madison had always been intelligent.
She had an understanding of topics that kids her age would struggle to understand. At last, she persuaded Linda to go shopping.
That’s okay, Linda said. “Girls, let’s purchase you the most beautiful clothes so that Daddy realizes how much he’s missing us! He will be sorry for abandoning us in this manner! Linda broke down in tears as she spoke, and her daughters consoled her by giving her hugs.
“Mom, Dad doesn’t want to see you depressed. I am aware. Madison patted her mother’s back and whispered.
On Brian’s birthday the next day, the young ladies dressed up and strolled hand in hand to Brian’s grave. Behind them was Linda.
The tiny girls saw two exquisitely wrapped boxes with their names on them and a small tag on top indicating that they were from Brian once they were in front of his gravestone.
“Mom!” “Look, Daddy sent us gifts!” Isla looked to Linda. He’s a fool! “He is unaware that we ought to present him with presents on his birthday,” he said, laughing.
Madison looked at Linda as if to let her know that Brian couldn’t have sent them that. Gifts are not sent by deceased individuals.
He might have been missing his girls. “Girls, feel free to open the box,” Linda replied, smiling encouragingly.
Linda fought to suppress her tears as the two girls opened the boxes. Madison was crying for the first time since Brian’s passing, while Isla was beaming with joy.
Each box contained a note from Brian and a pretty pair of Mary Janes.
“Shoes!” Isla chirped. “Mom, they look so lovely! Pink is my fave color!
The letter stated:
“My most beautiful girls,
Here in heaven, some angels are taken aback by how attractive girls may be! They claim that you are the most gorgeous girl that God has ever made. Daddy can see how stunning you look when you dress up. However, I purchased these shoes for you because I wanted to make my girls look even more stunning. I’m hoping you enjoy them.
You see, even though your father is not physically present, he is always present in your heart. I am aware that my girls have stopped eating ice cream and cookies. I know Mommy has refilled the pantry with large cookie boxes, but don’t tell her. That’s what I witnessed her doing. I’d like to hear about your successful thefts behind your mother’s back the next time you come see me. We won’t stop bothering mama just because Daddy isn’t around! Every day, I want you girls to be joyful and smile. You don’t have to be good all the time. Mommy doesn’t like that, I’m sure.
Girls, I appreciate you coming to see me and wishing me a happy birthday. Daddy misses and loves you.
I’m sending my beautiful girls tons of love.
Brian.
That’s too much for me to read, I guess! Isla grumbled. “What did Daddy write, Madison?”
Madison gave Elsa a firm hug. He added that he is content with his current situation and that he wants us to be content as well, Isla. He is missing us. Knowing that the boxes were from her, she said, “Thank you for everything, mom.” “Thank you for bringing us here.”
Linda grinned and muttered, “I love you both,” as she thanked her daughters for enabling her to overcome her sadness and for giving her the courage to go see Brian.
What does this narrative teach us?
Love creates links that cannot be broken by death. Even though Brian is in the sky far away from his family, he is always there in their hearts.Mothers prioritize their children above all else. Although Linda was not yet prepared to visit Brian, she found the strength to do so after witnessing her daughters’ intense desire to meet their father.
